Sylenth1 is not just another synth. It was built from
a producer’s point of view. It was built to produce

to achieve unheard warmth and clarity. The graphical
interface ensures the highest level of usability so

Oscillators

At its core Sylenth1 houses 4 alias-free unison
oscillators, which generate analog shaped waveforms.
Each oscillator is capable of producing 8 unison
voices in full stereo, adding up to a total of 32
voices per note. With its 16 notes of polyphony this
means you can play up to 512 voices simultaneously!
The oscillators perform extremely well in both the
very low (down to 0.01Hz and below!) and very high
(all the way up to half the samplerate) frequency
regions without losing their sharpness, liveliness or
character. This makes them well suited for all kinds
of sounds, from the deepest basses imaginable to the
highest crystal clear bells.

Filters

On top of that there are 2 state of the art, pure

drive of a real analog filter. The resonance control
can be turned up to a level way beyond self
-oscillation and combined with the drive control this
makes it possible to let the filters SCREAM! Where a

Modulation

Sylenth offers many modulation options to sculpture
the sound any way you like. There are 2 ADSR
envelopes and 2 LFO’s which can be used to modulate a
whole set of different parameters. Next to that, it
is possible to use the extra 2 amplitude envelopes,
velocity, keyboard track or modulation wheel as a
source for modulation.

Master FX

The final part of this synth is the master effects
section. A set of 7 professional quality sound
effects and an arpeggiator, conveniently grouped into
an LCD panel structure.

would max out even the fastest CPU in no-time,
especially considering the high sound quality of each
single voice and effect. Well, one of the many
benefits of this synth is that it doesn’t. It uses
highly optimized code and SSE instructions in order
to reduce the CPU usage to a minimum. It will also
automatically turn off any parts that are not used,
to save extra CPU time. This enables you to create
pure quality sound using only minimal system
resources.

Most music is composed by using several layers, called Tracks.

A track is a horizontal lane on which you can place musical parts arranged in time.

Arranging these tracks and parts into compositions is done in the Composer, cfr the above picture.

There are 2 types of parts: Audio File Parts and Sequence Parts.

An Audio File Part, or short: Audio Part, plays an audio file from your harddisk.

For each Audio Part, you can set the start location within that audio file. This can be done in the Audio Lab.

You can open the Audio Lab by double-clicking the Audio Part, or by pressing [Tab] or via the part’s context menu (right-click).

A Sequence Part plays an Event (aka MIDI) Sequence, which is a sequence of events (e.g. Notes) that make up a melody, rhythm-groove, filter-sweep etc…

Each Part can be routed to a Target, for example a Rack with a virtual synth, which turns the received events into real sound.

You can set the Target for a Part via the Part Property Panel at the top right of MU.LAB’s main window.

You can also define a single Target for a full track so that all parts on that track send their output to that common Track Target.

The Sequences themselves can be edited in the Key Editor and List Editor, by double-clicking or right-clicking the Sequence Part, or by pressing [Tab].

Most of the time, you’ll use Racks as Targets for the parts in your composition. A Rack is a collection of plugins that process your audio and events and route it to an output.

All of these objects (i.e. Compositions, Parts, Sequences, Racks, etc…) are part of a Session.

Note that you can have more than 1 Composition in a Session.

To finish this brief overview: At the top of the screen you’ll find 3 panels: The Main Menu, the Transport Panel and the Part Property Panel.

The Main Menu contains 3 menus to access application-wide functions like “Open Session” and “MIDI Setup” etc…

The Transport Panel lets you start and stop the sequencer, start recording, set the tempo and so on.

The Part Property Panel shows/edits which Target is used for a certain part, which Audio File or Sequence it plays, etc…

Last but not least: Note that a lot of MU.LAB’s functionality is located in the context menus which popup when you Right-Click the relevant object!

The FM technology

One of the 'warmest', crisp, and clear Frequency Modulation engines in the world, owes its sound to the precise calculation of the digital signal. Due to high-resolution DSP processing, it produces sound with an extremely low noise threshold; something that most FM engines cannot offer. The Toxic Biohazard sound was built from the ground up, via Image Line's unique mathematical calculations and analog-modeling techniques.

The Oscillators

Completely alias-free, and well tuned for all sampling rates, they produce a rich, "fat" sound all across the spectrum. Due to the high quality of the anti-aliasing process, users will not encounter the shredding noise on high frequencies that has plagued some FM synthesis implementations in the past. Furthermore, the oscillators are calculated at extremely high speeds, keeping your CPU usage to a minimum. Toxic's low CPU consumption affords the user plenty of room for external processing and running multiple instances. The oscillators also come equipped with Maxx Claster's own powerful spectrum analysis technology. This allows the user to create his or her own waveforms, via the simple process of loading a WAV or AIFF format sound file. All of these features make the oscillators very flexible, and allow for the use of both synthetic and acoustic waveforms within Toxic III. Each oscillator also comes with 32 built in 'classic' waveforms, each shown to be the most useful in FM synthesis.

The Effects

Made to assure high quality and flexibility is built into the synthesizer its self, Toxic Biohazard aims to reduce the need for external processing altogether. The effect modules are designed to give the user access to several types of effects, from aggressive, tube-like distortion, to warm stereo delay, reverb, flanger, and phaser effects. With Image Line's tape delay emulation, based on non-fixed delay buffer sizes, instead of the usual methods incorporated within digital delays, the delay lines give you warm sound, with "true" feedback and modulation. Lastly, the signal chain features an analog-modeled, parametric equalizer to further shape your sound. The EQ provides access to crisp, clear high-end definition, creamy mid ranges and earth-shaking low-end frequencies. The Toxic Biohazard effect modules expands its palette of sound to include everything from dark, atmospheric textures to razor sharp leads, fit to slice easily through any mix.

The Filter

Maxx Claster's own analog-modeled, multi-mode filter is reminiscent of a certain silver box of old. Garnishing a warm, resonant Low-Pass mode, a smooth Band-Pass setting, and a creamy High-Pass mode, Toxic Biohazard gives a wealth of control over tone. The filter is further enhanced by modulation via a dedicated envelope generator and low frequency oscillator, as well as responding to velocity information and keyboard tracking. These features allow for extreme sound shaping, as well as subtle nuances attributed to dynamic playing.

The Sequencer

Powerful, yet simple, the sequencer offers a total of 64 steps, which can be divided into two independent, 32 step modules to allow double-polyphonic patterns. Using Image Line's "Smart Sequencer" technology, when a chord is played, the module defines that chord, and tunes the pattern accordingly. Advanced reverb editing
Matrix Modulation allows for any of the reverb parameters to be controlled by two internal LFOs and two internal Envelope generators. This offers the ability to create complex and articulated reverb effects that can go way beyond what is normally expected from a conventional reverb processor. All Matrix Modulations are completely user definable. Macros allow for simultaneous control (with a single slider) over many reverbs' parameters, with different depth and polarity for very smooth morphing between different reverberant spaces. Any parameter is automated via DAW's proprietary automation, with full and seamless integration allowing efficient and convenient use of today's most advanced control surfaces.
